About the Project & Team

After the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the humanitarian crisis continues. The displacement of civilians and the overall humanitarian needs are enormous.

According to the UN, by July 2025, over 49,400 civilian casualties had been verified, including almost 13,900 deaths. Around 3.7 million people remain internally displaced, while another 5.7 million Ukrainians have sought refuge abroad (as of July 2025).

As a humanitarian organization, CADUS has been working in Ukraine since March 2022 to support local capacities in their emergency relief operations. Our current program focuses on complementing existing MedEvac capacities, interfacility transfer capacities and providing medical training to local professionals and volunteers. As a staff member in this project, doctors, nurses and paramedics work together with staff from our local partner organizations within the field of medical evacuations.

Team Structure & Supervision

You will work as part of a small, two-person medical team alongside a Ukrainian driver and translator. You will operate strictly under the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provided and the direct supervision of our Medical Coordinators. Doctors must operate strictly within their professional scope of practice.

Core Responsibilities

• Patient Transport: Manage patient transport missions that may range from ICU Level 1 to Level 3 and can last up to approximately 8 hours. The Doctor is fully responsible for the continuous management of intubated and ventilated patients during these transports.
• Emergency Flexibility: Be willing and able to drive the ambulance (requires a Class B driving license) during non-patient transport scenarios, as emergencies require a high degree of flexibility.
• Logistical Support: Support the team with daily logistical and administrative tasks as requested. These duties may include managing inventory, procurement (e.g., food shopping, medical consumables), coordinating vehicle maintenance (including cleaning), and participating in the writing or reviewing of SOPs.

Required qualifications

• A medical degree and license with at least 5 years of post-qualification professional experience as a doctor
• A minimum of 2 years of professional experience (within the 5-year period) as an Anesthesiologist, Intensive Care Doctor, or Emergency Medicine Doctor with demonstrated pre-hospital care experience. This means that you have 2 years experience as the independent treatment decision maker for critically ill patients.
• Ability to independently intubate patients and manage a ventilator
• Mandatory certification in ATLS / ALS / ACLS / PHTLS (at least having one of these is required)
• Proficiency in eFAST ultrasound (or equivalent) given the need for pre-transport patient scans
• Proven ability to manage a ventilated patient for 6+ hours, including the appropriate use of sedation, vasopressors, and paralytics
• Availability to commit for a minimum of 7 weeks starting end of May 2026 (including travel and onboarding)
• High capacity for teamwork, stress tolerance, and flexibility in accepting existing assignment and operational structures

Other requirements

• Min. experience in remote medicine and/or conflict zones of 2 years
• Full COVID-19 vaccination (currently three doses) and adherence to STIKO-recommended standard vaccinations
• Driving Permit (Class B)
• Demonstrated knowledge of Humanitarian Principles and a strong commitment to the organization’s Code of Conduct

Desirable qualifications

• A completed Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) certification
